Why Does the Age of a Baby’s Mother Matter?

Today older women have a greater risk of birthing babies with conditions caused by chromosome abnormalities—such as Down Syndrome—than younger women. WSU Professor of Molecular Biosciences Patricia Hunt believes the reason may lie in the meiotic process, the early cell division that halves the number of chromosomes in reproductive cells.
