A Passion for Mathematics

David Koslicki explains his work on fractals to Math Chair and Associate Dean, V.S. Manoranjan.
Theoretical mathematics major David Koslicki graduated in December and will spend spring semester doing independent research on a project titled “Permutations, Substitutions, and Fractals.” Then he will enter the graduate math program at Pennsylvania State University in the fall of 2007.
David was a transfer student from Skagit Valley College, which he attended after being home schooled. As a small child, David had an aptitude for mathematics and, inspired by his father, essentially taught himself through pre-calculus. As a teenager, he did running start at Skagit Valley, where he took math courses from Greta Kocol. One day in class, she went off on a tangent about the different levels of infinity. This introduction to the beauty and wonder of mathematics sent David off to the library in search of more information regarding this intricate and fascinating topic.
In 2004, David transferred to Washington State University to complete his undergraduate degree. In the fall of 2005, he participated in a Mathematics Advanced Studies Semester at Pennsylvania State University. This highly selective program draws the best mathematics students from throughout the nation. There he started work on his Permutations project. Back at WSU, he continued to work on the project with support from his advisor, mathematics Professor Judi McDonald. The results from this study will be submitted for publication.
In addition to his interest in mathematics, David is also heavily involved in the United States Pony Club, a national horsemanship organization. In the summer of 2003, he went to the club’s national competition as the stable manager for dressage representing the northwest region. He continues his involvement as an equine instructor working with young children.
Koslicki was selected as Highlight Student for the College of Sciences for the December Graduation ceremony.
