This has been an extraordinarily productive year in the College of Sciences. Our faculty and students have made groundbreaking research discoveries and our research grant dollars have grown. In addition, our entering science majors continue to arrive with greater capabilities. This is in part due to the very successful Regents’ Scholars program, which was initiated five years ago. The scholarships offered by this program offer up to full-rides to the top students from Washington state high schools. Students who plan to major in a science or math receive a high percentage of these scholarships. It is with great pleasure that we see the accomplishments of these very bright students displayed at our annual Undergraduate Research Poster Competition each spring.

In addition, we are very proud to note that our alumni and friends, have become even more committed and supportive of our efforts to sharpen our standing. In the 2006 fiscal year, the College of Sciences received $1.7 million, while the University as a whole raised $60 million. We are pleased to note that ever more of our alumni are giving to the college: this year our alumni participation rate was 18.3 percent, up from 15.3 percent last year. Our deep appreciation goes to all of you who have made a gift or have made arrangements for a planned gift this year.

You may not realize how much encouragement your gifts provide to our faculty and students. In addition to the financial support they give to students and programs, donations are also recognized as votes of confidence for our efforts to provide the best education we can. Your gifts are important to our success and urge us to continually strive harder.

On behalf of the faculty, students, and staff of the College of Sciences, I thank you.
